Hiking Group 2026 Schedule

An outline of the planned hikes is below, more details and signups will be sent to those who have signed up for WSC Hiking newsletters.

In addition to planned hikes listed on the schedule, additional impromptu outings are announced via the WSC Hiking newsletters.

If a hike needs to be canceled or rescheduled, the trip leader will notify all participants who have signed up for that hike by email or phone.

HIKER RESPONSIBILITY: Please review the difficulty of the hike before signing up. In addition, hikers should notify the hike leader of any medical conditions that may affect their ability to participate in the hike.

Wintergreen Sporting Club members are invited to suggest additional hikes they have personally hiked. Questions, suggestions, or to volunteer to assist in leading a trip, members can email hiking@wtgsportingclub.org. 

2026 Hiking Schedule

February 17 Tuesday Post- Valentines Day Hike
Rockfish Valley Trails (Camille Memorial Trailhead) Rockfish River Trail and Glenthorne Loop Trail, 3 miles, easy, flat trail. Dog Friendly hike. Bring chocolate to share at end of hike.

March 7 Saturday- Wintergreen Viewpoint on Humpback Mountain
(Trailhead access from Laurel Springs Drive in Wintergreen) A 4- mile out and back moderate hike with 1000 feet elevation gain and loss on the Appalachian Trail. Rock ledge with great view of Wintergreen Ski Slopes.

April 17 Friday - Crabtree Falls
(Rt 56 Trailhead Access )  A 3-mile out and back, moderately difficult hike with 1000 feet elevation gain and loss. 1000 feet multi-level waterfall.

May 9 Saturday-White Rock Falls
(Blue Ridge Parkway Trailhead at mile 18.5)
Slacks Overlook and White Rock Falls Trails
4.5 mile loop hike , moderate hike with 850 elevation gain and loss. Highlights include White Rock Falls overlook, White Rock Falls and spring flowers

June 6- 7 Weekend: Bike/ Hike Grayson Highlands
Combination multi - day bike/ hike trip.
Biking first day on Virginia Creeper Trail from Abington to Damascus Va. (16 miles one way).
Hiking second day in Grayson Highlands State Park. Highlights include high- alpine meadows & rocky outcroppings with spectacular mountain views, wild ponies and views of Mt Rogers( Va tallest peak).

July 9 Thursday - North Fork Mormons River to Big Branch Falls 4.5 miles
(Trailhead at Charlottesville Reservoir at end of Sugar Hollow Road, north of Crozet) North Fork Mormons River Trail from Reservoir to Big Branch Falls , 4.5- mile out and back, easy hike with some swimming holes. Highlights - cool hike with thick tree canopy and some river crossings and swimming hole.

August 21 Friday - Blue Ridge Tunnel 
(Trailhead - West Entry Rt 250, East Entry Rt 6 
Hike starts West Entry ) 2.5-mile one way easy hike through historic train tunnel. Hike guided by Va Tech geology instructor, Laura Neser.

September 17 Thursday- Dragons Tooth
(Trailhead- Rt 311 west of Salem VA)
5-mile difficult out and back hike with 1,300 feet elevation gain and loss with an exposed  rock scramble section) Highlights are the dramatic tooth- like rock formation and spectacular mountain and valley views. Hike is part of Virginia’s designated hiking triple crown which includes McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs. Based on the amount of interest, we will also do an additional two-night backpacking trip (15 additional miles) to complete the triple crown.

October 23 Friday- Three Ridges to Hanging Rock
(Trailhead-Blue Ridge Parkway, near Love Va )
7-mile, moderately difficult out and back hike with 1700 feet elevation gain & loss. Highlight will be Fall foliage & views from Hanging Rock.

November 12 Thursday- TATC Cabin and Hike
(TATC Cabin – parking at MP 18.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway)
Annual picnic at Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club cabin. Pre- picnic hike will be on the Torry Ridge trail.

Hikers should always bring:
· Daypack
. Snacks and water
· Weather-appropriate clothing. (If rain is forecasted, bring a rain jacket.)
· Sun Protection. (Sunglasses, sunscreen, or sunhat)
· Appropriate footwear

Insect repellent and hiking poles are recommended but not required. For longer hikes, a flashlight or headlamp is also recommended.

Typically, dogs are not permitted on the hikes, except where specifically noted in the trail description. (This does not apply to service dogs.) Hikes are limited to WSC members. Unless otherwise noted, members are allowed to bring one guest
