The Wintergreen Sporting Club shooting sport interest groups includes to groups: shotgun (clay and skeet) and pistol and rifle.

The club holds its shooting events at established public and private shooting areas in central Virginia.

This group's more experienced shooting members are happy to offer basic instructions on gun safety and some shooting techniques to members of the club new to the sport. Members new to the shooting sports are encouraged to take a safety course. The National Rifle Association's First Steps Pistol Class is offered at the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club and is open to the public for $35. The course is offered about once a month.

The WSC may have intra-club shooting competitions, but most shooting events are informal practice often with post-event luncheon get-togethers.

Questions, suggestions or to volunteer to offer a program or lead an event, members can email shooting@wtgsportingclub.org regarding shotgun and firearms@wtgsportingclub.org regarding pistol and rifle.

Shotgun (clay and skeet)

WSC has increased the number of shotgun shooting events per month at the request of several members.

Wintergreen Sporting Club shotgun group shoots at the Flying Rabbit in Mt. Crawford, Va., about an hour from Wintergreen. The shotgun group shoots at least two times a month, the second and fourth Fridays from November thru March; March thru October, on Thursdays, unless of a special event at the Rabbit. See the schedule here for more details. Often, extra shoots are offered and detailed in emails to the shotgun group.

The Flying Rabbit is a full-service NSCA-registered sporting clays range. Their course layout has a 16-station sporting clay range, a five-stand clay shooting range, and a five-position wobble range.

For new sporting clay enthusiast interested in learning, the Flying Rabbit offers a full-range of private or group instructions at a reasonable cost. Questions? Email shooting@wtgsportingclub.org

Pistol and Rifle

Pistol and rifle events are open to all WSC members with an interest in shooting–regardless of experience. If you are new to shooting sports, the group will offer tips to help make the experience a positive one. You will need (1) a gun to shoot; (2) ammunition to shoot it with; (3) protective glasses; (4) ear protection; and (5) a willingness to learn & have fun.

There are several sites for rifle and pistol shooting this group uses.

The indoor range in Charlottesville at the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club is for pistol and 22-cal rifle shooting. Several WSC members belong to RRPC. WSC and RRPC are not affiliated. To shoot at RRPC you must be a member of RRPC or a guest of an RRPC member.

There is also Hite Hollow, a free shooting range the US Forest Service has outside of Staunton. Questions? Email firearms@wtgsportingclub.org.
