Thinking about Archery in 2023

We have some ideas about restructuring our 2023 archery sessions at the Jerry Rendich Range at Rodes Farm that we want to run by our archers. Read this over and share your thoughts; simply email archery@wtgsportingclub.org.

First, three observations:

  • We want to continue our introduction to archery sessions to attract newcomers. We are even considering offering occasional Saturday sessions for weekenders.

  • Our voluntary achievement program (from 20 yards) has been a resounding success. That will not change.

  • Several archers are approaching the top achievement levels at 20 yards and will soon need new goals.

Given the above, consider these modifications at our Tuesday sessions:

  • Begin with Introduction to Archery, shooting at 10 yards. This may be an appointment-only session if our loaner equipment is needed.

  • The second session would be our classic coaching and practice shoot at 20 yards.

  • A third session where the stands move to 30 yards would have new achievement levels for those needing to be more challenged.

We would not be segregating as much as this might sound. Regular archers could opt to come to warm up during the first session at 10 yards. Newcomers could stay and shoot at 20 yards and mingle with our jolly regular archers.

We have no room for expanding from six lanes at the Rodes Farm range. With our increasing participation, we often needed to shoot in waves last year. Adding sessions such as this may help stagger the number of archers on the line at one time.

Also, John Morgan, our certified archery instructor, is interested in helping individuals to become more consistent via a smooth execution of the shot process. He is going to be making himself available for individual or group coaching sessions. Most of the ideas here have come from John.

There are some details here to be worked out, such as a start time. But, before we did any more planning we thought we'd ask for some input about these changes.
