Update from Al Simpson
/From Al Simpson
Sorry for the sad news, but many years of drought have led to some of the worst fishing in Virginia that I have personally experienced. Here’s a brief update on local fishing:
- Mossy Creek has the lowest water level I have ever seen. Much of the stream has “islands” that shouldn’t be there, narrowing the fishable channels. The water is off-color from wading cattle, hatches very sparse, and fish even more sparse. Would not recommend a trip there.
- South River, both upper and lower sections, have catchable fish. not too many big fish, but some will put a bend on the rod. Probably the best local choice at present, but not the stream we hope it to be.
- The Maury River, usually a reliable smallmouth stream, has suffered as well; very few fish, mostly chubs.
