Shooting: 2017 schedule for sporting clays, wobble or 5-stand at Flying Rabbit

The WSC Shooting group's shotgun team has twice-a-month scheduled events at Flying Rabbit just north of Mt. Crawford, Va. There are also often impromptu events announced via email to interested WSC members. All members are welcomed.

The scheduled events are tentative and are confirmed via email. Times and details often change. Assume unconfirmed events will not be held due to weather, level of interest or other factors. To receive emails on events, sign up the club’s free email newsletters and check “shooting-shotgun" or email shooting@wtgsportingclub.org for the most recent plans. The members interested in participating in a shotgun event must respond to the group leaders’ announcement emails. 

Typically, at 10am on the day of the event, valley members gather in the parking lot of Stoney Creek’s golf club while those on the mountain meet at the WPOA office building near the Wintergreen gatehouse. The two groups meet at Flying Rabbit (about 45 minutes from Wintergreen).

Shooting at Flying Rabbit typically goes on for about two hours. It is common for this group to gather for lunch at a local restaurant afterwards.

The WSC relationship with Flying Rabbit is through long-standing members of the shoot venue who are leaders in WSC. WSC members shoot as hosted guests; WSC membership does not include membership in Flying Rabbit. On Wednesdays WSC often has the facility to itself. There are discounts for veterans. Flying Rabbit offers Sporting Clays, Five Stand and Wobble

Unlike trap and skeet where targets fly in regular and predictable formations, sporting clays simulate the unpredictability of live-quarry shooting. Trajectories, angles, speeds, elevations, distances, and target sizes vary. Flying Rabbit’s sporting clay course has 16 shooting stations.

Wobble at Flying Rabbit is offered from a five-position wooden structure with the launcher underneath. In wobble, clay targets are thrown in various patterns (i.e, out straight, up, left and right). The main difference in wobble from standard trap shooting is how the target’s flight path oscillates, making it more challenging. Bird hunters find that it is helpful training.

In Five Stand, there are five different stations, or stands, and several strategically placed clay target throwers at each one. Shooters move from stand to stand and shoot in turn at various combinations of clay birds at each stand. Each station lets the shooter know which direction the clay targets will be coming from.

Scheduled shooting is for the second and fourth Wednesdays at the Flying Rabbit for Sporting Clays, Wobble, or 5-stand for 2017. Weather permitting, of course. (Impromptu events also occur.) This schedule is tentative and not confirmed:
