Hike: North Fork Moormans River, Thursday, July 9th

Moormans River Hike Signup:

Join us on a hike along the North Fork of the Moorman River to Big Branch Falls. This beautiful hike starts near the Sugar Hollow Reservoir and follows the river upstream into Shenandoah National Park. (Note: parking is not inside the park). There are a few swimming holes (or wading holes when the water is low) along the way.

Afterwards, join us for lunch at Pro Re Nata Brewery (6135 Rockfish Gap Turnpike, Crozet, VA 22932) on the way back home. They have a variety of pub foods as well as acai bowls, wraps and salads.

Maximum Hikers: 15. Open to WSC members. Each member can bring a guest. 

Meet: If you would like to carpool, meet at the Stoney Creek golf parking lot at 8:30 am. Or, if you want to meet at the Moormans River Trailheads (3752 Black Rock Gap Rd, Crozet, VA 22932) - please be there by 9:20 am (It is a 50 minute drive from Stoney Creek) Note: parking is limited and carpooling is recommended. If the lot fills up, there is parking along the road. Note: the last mile to the parking lot is unpaved but in good condition.

Trail Description: This out and back trail is a moderately easy 4.5-mile hike with about 500 feet of elevation gain and loss. The trail is well-maintained (part is an old forest road) and has a couple rock hops across the river. The hike ends at the 25-foot waterfall.

Difficulty: Moderately easy. (500’ elevation gain and loss). Distance: 4.5 miles; Hike Duration: 2.5 - 3 hours.

Bring: Daypacks, water (1 to 2 liters per person), and snacks.  Hiking poles and insect repellent are recommended.
