Jackson River - Thursday, August 8, 2024

We like the Upper Jackson River for several reasons. It is an easy, dependable run because of the controlled flow caused by the dam's release of water from Lake Moomaw. There aren’t as many streams feeding the river, and the water is also usually cool because of the flow from the lake.

The Smith Bridge to Intervale run has several Class I & II rapids, which make this section fun and exciting yet easy for beginners to paddle. This trip launches at the National Forest Smith Bridge shoreline river access point and ends back at Alleghany Outdoor's take-out at the Intervale Park ramp. The paddle is 10 river miles long; it typically takes four to five hours.

We will gather at Alleghany Outdoors at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 8, 2024, for our group's trip.  Google Maps says Wintergreen is about two hours away.

With taxes, etc., the cost of a single sit-in kayak is about $55, for example. This includes the rental of a boat, paddles, life jackets, safety orientation, river maps, use of dry bags, and all required shuttles. Our contact person at the outfitter is Matt Fisher. (1903 Dressler Drive, Covington VA 24426; 540-969-1800). Register for the trip here.

Paddlers interested in carpooling from Wintergreen, leaving at 8:20 am sharp, should call me at 540-430-0610. Questions? Email me at boating@wtgsportingclub.org.
