WSC starts a Hiking Group

The new WSC Hiking Group will explore hiking opportunities in the central Virginia area, similar to how the WSC biking and boating groups have worked.

Wayne & Mary Lou Mortimer have agreed to serve as co-leaders of the new WSC Hiking Group.

They are very familiar with hiking in central Virginia, having hiked and backpacked most of the trails in the area, including the entire Appalachian Trail in Virginia.

The first WSC group hike is set for Wednesday, May 15, to the White Rock Falls Loop off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The couple have been active in the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club for over 30 years. The Tidewater group is a serious player on the state's hiking scene, taking on major commitments such as caring for the AT from Reid’s Gap to the Tye River.

Wayne is a retired architect and Mary Lou is a retired Structural Engineer from Virginia Beach. They now reside in Stoney Creek.

The hiking group’s leads say the WSC hikes will vary from easy to challenging, long and short. "The goal is to provide a fun way to explore new and familiar parts of this region’s beautiful nature and history with your friends and neighbors," says Mary Lou Mortimer. "The club strives to have every hiker have a good experience on every hike."

In addition to hiking the trails of Wintergreen mountain and Stoney Creek, the WSC hikers explore the trails of The Blue Ridge Parkway and national forests, state parks, and regional parks.
