Meeting was called to order by President John Tani. Secretary Stu Harvey and Treasurer Bruce Henderson were attending board members.
Treasurer report: Bruce Henderson
Currently 205 members – up from 190 at the start of the year. Treasury contains $5645 for the past 10 months.
- all the money comes from the dues, the majority of money goes to offset costs of the spring and fall dinner meetings (+$400 dinner fees, -$1572 Dr Ho’s, -$75 WPOA fee for Tuckahoe rental, -$117 supplies (water, table cloths, etc)
- Checkbook balance as of November 8, 2017, = $4,567.
Costs per sports group this past year:
-Boating $75 – supplies, flotation devices, trailer maint
-Shotgun $0
-Pistol and Rifle $100 to 200 (membership at Rivanna)
-Fishing (WPOA does donate some money) $250 to 300
-Stocking of trout pond, trout food, 2 bass tournaments
-Archery $450 to 550, equipment and upkeep of ranges in valley and on Old Stoney Creek
Biking $0
Marketing $437, banners, flyers, website, stationery, membership cards, etc.
Approval of spending: If under $100, one board member can approve, if over $100, 2 out of 3 board members must approve.
Nominations for club secretary
Stu Harvey’s term of 2 years has expired – in recognition of his service to the club he was given a lifetime membership to the club. He thanked both John and Bruce for their continued services to the club. Robin Pullen was nominated by Charles Batchelor. There were no other
nominations. The present membership voted in favor of voting Robin as incoming secretary.
Judy Rendich, social committee chairperson, explained how the dinner would proceed following the conclusion of the business meeting. Dinner was catered by Dr. Ho’s at the suggestion of Bruce Henderson. Assistants included Carol Dworin, Stu and Pat Harvey, Odette Henderson, Mary Jean Tani, Mimi and Ron Soltau, to name a few. The Italian dinner brought out the decorative talents of the committee as to table decorations and music.
Stu Harvey procured donated wine glasses for this very sophisticated dinner which can be kept by those enjoying the dinner.
Club Reports:
Archery: Mike Capps
- Two co-leaders: Jerry Rendich, Mike Capps
- Practice every Tuesday at Rodes Farm range from April through October. Weather dependent there may be periodic practices over the next month or so.
- Twice monthly trips to the trail range on Old Stoney Creek Road.
- Ten regular archers.
- There were 23 newcomers, visitors and cheerleaders over this past season.
- There is both adult and youth loaner equipment. For the Minion Day activities, youth beginner equipment was financed by the club. There were 4 youths that came out for lessons, ages 10 to teenager.
- Jerry is able to help fix some minor equipment mishaps and failures
and maintains the archery bow and arrow stands.
- -Jeanie Proctor hand-painted numbers over the lanes on Rodes Farm range.
- The first Invitational Championship was held at the last practice session which also concluded with a picnic that included a surprise birthday party for Stu Harvey. Robin Pullen won the first-place prize.
- Honorable mentions: Charles Batchelor and Mike McMahon.
Biking: Chuck Thornsvard
- There are 3 co-leaders: Bob Browne, Chuck, and Barbara Thornsvard
- 53 members to date – outstanding for a new start-up group.
- Had 4 organized rides, one of which included an overnight stay.
- In process of planning rides for next season.
Boating: Jerry Rendich
- Two co-leads: Jerry and Judy Rendich
- Did not have a very exciting year due to initially high waters that created dangers at the beginning of the summer and then low waters the end of summer. Plans for next year include river adventures in May and June and reservoir trips in July and August. There will also be an eastern VA outing that may include an overnight.
- There is a lot of loaner equipment available for the asking.
Fishing: Bruce Henderson
- Four co-leads: Bruce Henderson, John Tani, Mike Fisher, Al Simpson.
- There are 14 ponds on Wintergreen property in the valley which have recently all received names that will be used by the club. There will soon be information on the website to include pictures of the ponds, information as to access points with easement side and what
particular species of fish you will find there.
- WPOA generously paid to have the trout pond stocked this year and members of the WPOA board were present to witness the stocking.
- Several instructional classes were offered this past year in fly-tying and fly casting.
- The fall bass fishing tournament was won by John Holman with a 9.3 lb. catch. The prize was a gift certificate to Field and Stream.
- This year monthly conclave meetings were held at Wild Wolf for the purpose of trading information on best places to fish, what lures to use and for general comradery.
- A goal for the late fall and winter will be to try to improve the habitats of the ponds to help the fish thrive and clean up the 20-foot easement. WPOA needs to be contacted for permission.
- Bruce and John are willing to take people out for private lessons or to discuss equipment needs.
Pistol and Rifle: Ron Cote
- Ron Cote is leader and has a membership to Rivanna Pistol and Rifle Club for which he can take a small number of people as guests. Rivanna has both indoor and outdoor facilities.
- Hite Hollow is run by the national forest service and has outdoor ranges.
- First and third Mondays of the month the group meets at the end of the golf club parking lot at 9 AM and return by midafternoon. Lunch is either at Dr. Ho’s or The Depot depending on where they have gone shooting.
- Jim White will be holding another Intro to Shooting Safety on November 29th at the Monocan Pavilion. Information to follow.
Shot Gun: Charles Schulte
- Two co-leaders: Charles Schulte and John Tani
- 12-14 members with 8 regulars attending.
- Flying Rabbit shooting facility just south of Harrisonburg.
- Previously was 2 nd and 4 th Wednesday of the month but this will be changed to Fridays.
- 12 and 20 gauge shot guns only.
- There is loaner equipment for beginners.
- Lunch at Tailgate follows a shoot.
- This past year the group lost 2 members and held a memorial shoot in their honor.
- Women’s shooting is encouraged with the owner of Flying Rabbit offering lessons to the women.
Director of Communications is Charles Batchelor who has been doing an amazing job not only with the website but with marketing materials for the club. At the WPOA meeting on November 11 th there is a brand-new flier that will be placed in the packets and available at the WTG Sporting Club information table.
The next Sporting Club meeting will be March 31, 2018. As the time nears information will be found on the website. It will be interesting to see what the social committee plans for the next dinner meeting!
