Pistol and Rifle Group Fall 2023
/The fall season of the WSC Shooting Group starts with us assembling at 9 am on Monday, October 2, in the parking lot of the Stoney Creek Golf Clubhouse and proceeding to Rivanna Rifle & Pistol Club. The weather forecast for Monday looks favorable for shooting outdoors.
This session will continue the WSC Rimfire Rifle Challenge. The WSC Challenge can be shot at distances of 50’ or 150’ however the targets at 50’ are tiny. Our thought is to limit the shooting at 50’ for shooting indoors on rainy Mondays.
There will be a few extra rimfire (.22 caliber) rifles to use if you don’t have one. Shooters might want to bring a blanket or mat for shooting in the prone position.
If those shooting desire to not participate in the WSC Challenge for pistol or rifle, they are free to shoot any firearm within the range rules. Note: At all times you must be with a member of the RRPC (or be a member) and always demonstrate safe handling of firearms.
We now have a group of over 20 regular shooters. Interested? New members in the WSC rifle and pistol group are welcome. The first step is to email either Jim White and Ron Coté (the WSC Group Leads) so sufficient materials are available.
The fall season will follow the same pattern shooting every Monday, except for national holidays. Our group typically assembles at 9 am in the parking lot of the Stoney Creek Golf Clubhouse to carpool or caravan to the RRPC ranges. The second half of the season will follow the same pattern shooting every Monday, except for national holidays. The tentative schedule for the second half of this season is as follows:
October 2 & 23- Rifle Shooting
October 9- Holiday
October 16 & 30- Pistol Shooting
November 6 & 20- Rifle Shooting
November 13- Pistol Shooting
November 27- TBD
December 4, 11 & 18 TBD
This is an appropriate time to emphasize firearm safety.
SAFETY is paramount in everything we do at any range.
The fundamental rules for safe gun handling include:
ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to shoot.
At the range:
No handling of firearms when anyone is downrange, place on the table action open.
When shooting indoors or outdoors, transport the firearm to the shooting position in a suitable gun case, or holster and keep the case nearby for return after shooting.
When shooting downrange, utilize a holster and keep the firearm inside the holster until ready to shoot. After shooting return the firearm to the holster before leaving the shooting position.
Note: Holsters should be designed to completely cover the trigger guard. For the safest entry and exit, elastic and canvas holsters at the range are discouraged.
Let’s continue to have an enjoyable, challenging, and safe shooting season.
