Archery 2022: Dates set, new targets, more instruction

Six new high-quality archery targets installed at Rodes Farm range

In March large wood boxes wrapped in tight fiber cloth covering 12 inches of dense foam were installed at the Rodes Farm archery range. They replaced six bag targets made of fiberglass stuffed with plastic shopping bags that hung from chains. Besides providing an overall better look and being much longer-lasting, arrows shot into these new targets are very easy to pull out (which was often not the case with the old bag targets). This project was funded by the Wintergreen Sporting Club with assistance from the Wintergreen Property Owners Association. The range is available to all Wintergreen property owners. (No broadhead arrows or crossbows are to be used on the new targets.)

In 2022 the WSC archery sessions at Rodes Farm Archery Range will again be on Tuesday mornings from 9 am to 11 am. At the field range at the end of Old Stoney Creek Road, sessions will again be on alternating Sunday afternoons from 2 pm to 4 pm. (The times may change later on in the season; check the archery emails for updates.) The WSC Archery Achievement Awards program will return to Rodes Farm. WSC member John Morgan, a certified Level 2 archery instructor, will continue offering instruction this season. Here are the details:

At our Rodes Farm range this year

There will be three Tuesday “pre-season” sessions at the Jerry Rendich Archery Range at Rodes Farm Range starting on March 15 and the following two Tuesdays (March 22 and 29).

A special season opener at Rodes Farm range is set for Saturday, April 2nd at 1 pm. All Wintergreen property owners are invited for a tour and to learn the basics of archery on that day. RSVP needed, email archery@wtgsportingclub.org.

The official season opener at Rodes Farm is on Tuesday, April 5 from 9-11 am which will mark the start of the regular Tuesday afternoon sessions. Regular 30-minute seminars by Archery Instructor John Morgan on Tuesdays at 8:30 am will be announced in the archery emails. John will touch on topics such as grip, aiming using string walking for recurves, and release mechanism for compound bows, etc.

As before, limited coaching for newcomers is offered at 10 am at Rodes Farm. Advance confirmation by emailing us at archery@wtgsportingclub.org is required. The club has loaner equipment for all ages. Besides our certified instruction our experienced archers are happy to share their knowledge about archery basics. If you join us for the first time, just bring yourself, a smile, and a sense of humor.
