Trout Tournament 2021 report

To have better weather, the Wintergreen Trout Tournament coordinators–Ron Coté and Jerry Gress–moved the event from Saturday to Sunday, May 30th, starting at 2 pm at Trout Pond.

It was the right move. The sun showed up, the WSC volunteers showed up, the fishing men and women showed up, and even an audience of family, friends, and tourists showed up. Everyone had a good time, except–surprisingly–few trout showed up.

“Well over 50 people turned out,” Coté reports. “It was a fun community event and also a fund-raising benefit for the Wintergreen Fire and Rescue Department. We had 25 paid fisher people.

“A number of folks brought their kids or grandkids but did not fish themselves. Well over two dozen more came just to watch. The excitement and anticipation was sky high and everyone had a great time–even the spectators. Lots of fish were caught, but only one winning trout.”

This first-ever Wintergreen Trout Tournament was sponsored by the Wintergreen Sporting Club and the Wintergreen Property Owners Association. Learn more about the stocked trout pond in Stoney Creek here.

Newcomers to Wintergreen, Karen and Larry Reagan, enjoyed the Sunday afternoon next to the water with their visiting grandson, Isaiah.

WSC volunteers Dave Crabtree (front) and Lars Halverson manned the official weigh-station on the dam.

Bruce Henderson caught fish, but no trout, at the tournament, He’s often done better at Trout pond, as seen here.

Mike Brownley (left) and fly caster Marta Tice discussed with Jack Roberts the reality of being skunked while fishing with a well-designed fly rod versus a high end spinning rig. Their conclusion: “no advantage to either; Seems fish will do what fish will do.”
