An outline of the planned hikes is below, more details are sent to those who have signed up for WSC Hiking newsletters.

In addition to planned hikes listed on the schedule, additional impromptu outings are announced via the WSC Hiking newsletters.

If a hike needs to be canceled or rescheduled, the trip leader will notify all participants who have signed up for that hike by email or phone.

Typically, dogs are not permitted on the hikes, except where specifically noted in the trail description. (This does not apply to service dogs.) Hikes are limited to WSC members. Unless otherwise noted, members are allowed to bring one guest.

HIKER RESPONSIBILITY: Please review the difficulty of the hike before signing up. In addition, hikers should notify the hike leader of any medical conditions that may affect their ability to participate in the hike.

Wintergreen Sporting Club members are invited to suggest additional hikes they have personally hiked. Questions, suggestions, or to volunteer to assist in leading a trip, members can email hiking@wtgsportingclub.org.  Hikers who would like to be co-leads must be approved before leading WSC hikes.

White Rock Falls Loop Hike
Rescheduled: May 16, Thursday

Meet: Blue Ridge Parkway parking lot at MP 18.5 @ 9:30 am. (DD: 14 miles)

Difficulty: Moderate (830’ elevation gain and loss) HD: 4.5 miles; Duration: 2.5-3 hours

Description: This moderately strenuous hike has 850 feet of elevation gain and loss. This hike goes to scenic viewpoints and to a 30-foot cascading falls.

Bring daypacks, water (1or 2 liters PP) and snacks. Hiking poles are recommended. Limited to 15 hikers.

Cole (Cold) Mountain Hike
Friday, May 31

Meet: Stoney Creek Golf Course Parking Area. 9:00 am. Shuttle/Car Pool to Mount Pleasant Parking lot (DD: 36 miles) Note: the last 3 miles or so is on a gravel road.

Difficulty: Moderately Hard (1170’ elevation gain and loss)  HD: 6.2 miles; Duration: 4 hours

Description: This loop hike starts on the Old Hotel Trail and climbs to the top of Cole Mountain (4022’), with its mile of open meadows providing some of the best views in the area.

Bring: daypacks, water (2 liters pp recommended), lunch, and snacks. Hiking poles are recommended.

Blue Ridge Tunnel Hike
Friday, June 28

Meet at East Terminus (Afton Depot Lane) @ 10:00 am (DD: 14 miles)

Difficulty: Easy, HD: 2.5 miles, Duration: 1 - 1.5 hour

Description: Meet at the East Terminus and shuttle over to the West Terminus (cars at each end). We will hike west to east through the tunnel. After the hike, we will shuttle people back to their cars.

Bring: flashlights or headlamps

St Mary’s Wilderness Hike
Saturday, July 13

Meet: Stoney Creek Golf Course Parking Area at 9:00 am or at St Mary’s parking area at 10:00 am (DD: 32 miles)

Difficulty: Moderately Easy (305’ elevation gain/loss), HD: 4.3 miles, Duration: 3  hours

Description: This popular waterfall involves crossing the stream a few times. The out and back hike is through a beautiful, forested area adjacent to the stream.

Bring: daypack, water (1 liter PP recommended) and water shoes and/or old tennis shoes you don’t mind getting wet. (Can also bring extra shoes for after the hike). Hiking poles are recommended.

Limited to 10 hikers maximum (Wilderness Area)

Jones Run & Doyle River Falls, Shenandoah
Friday, August 16

Meet: Stoney Creek Golf Course Parking Area @ 9:00 am or Jones Run parking area at 10:00am (DD: 37 miles) (Note: Shenandoah charges $30/car if no one in the car has a National Park Pass)

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging (1226’ elevation gain/loss), HD: 7 miles Duration: 4 hours

Description: This loop hike is a mostly shaded popular hike and passes by waterfalls along both Jones Run River and Doyle River.

Bring: daypack, water (2-liter PP recommended), snacks and lunch. Hiking poles are recommended.

Dripping Rock South,
Blue Ridge Parkway
Friday, September 13

Meet: location TBD @ 11:00 am (either Blue Ridge Parkway Dripping Rock parking area; or in Wintergreen – Laural Springs by the Old AT trail)

Difficulty: Easy (272’ elevation gain/loss) HD: 2.6 miles Duration: 2-2.5 hours

Description: Bring your lunch, and a seat pad (or towel) for this out and back trail on the Appalachian trail. The hike goes to Cedar Cliffs which has a great view and a nice place to sit and eat lunch.

Bring: daypack, water, and lunch. Hiking poles are recommended.

Three Ridges Hike to Hanging Rock, Blue Ridge Parkway
Friday, October 18

Meet: Love Gap Parking area at MP 15.5 (on the left side of the road heading south) @ 10:00 am. (DD: 12 miles)

Difficulty: Challenging/Hard (1700’ elevation gain/loss) HD: 7 miles  Duration: 4 hours

Description: This beautiful fall hike starts at Love Gap along a forest road and then joins with the Appalachian Trail southbound. Hike over Bee Mountain and then on to Hanging Rock Ledge with beautiful views.

Bring: daypack, water (2 liters PP) and snacks. Hiking poles are recommended.

Limited to 10 hikers max (Wilderness area)

 

Hikers should always bring:
· Daypack
. Snacks and water
· Weather-appropriate clothing. (If rain is forecasted, bring a rain jacket.)
· Sun Protection. (Sunglasses, sunscreen, or sunhat)
· Appropriate footwear

Insect repellent and hiking poles are recommended but not required. For longer hikes, a flashlight or headlamp is also recommended.
