Boating: Upper James River Water Trail

  • Twin River Outfitters (map)

We are told that good river-running levels on the Upper James are between 2 and 4 ft. As of August 11, the river level was at 2.3 ft. and steady. (See daily report on river levels here.) Therefore, while July and August sometimes see water levels "too low," it looks promising right now. We are planning a trip on Thursday, August 15th.

We will run the Upper James River from Horseshoe Bend to Buchanan. This is a solid trip with great mountain scenery. The 9-mile-long trip has numerous Class I rapids and just one moderately challenging Class II rapid. The first four miles of the trip holds a State Scenic River designation. The trip ends where our cars are parked at the outfitter, so we can be extra-flexible.

We'll meet at Twin River Outfitters in Buchanan, Va., before 9 am on Thursday, August 15th. (Leaving Wintergreen about 7:15ish should allow plenty of time.) [map]

Twin River Outfitters is handling all of the official paperwork, reservations, payments, etc.
